1. Introduction
At the beginning of this cumulative dissertation in the spring of 2022, I thought of disinformation as a key problem on platforms like TikTok — an issue that needed further investigation in order to better understand the broader condition of information disorder as theorised by Wardle and Derakhshan (2017).
While working on the four papers that, together with this Dachschrift, constitute this dissertation, I quickly re-oriented toward the broader concept of propaganda, a concept whose explanatory reach extends well beyond content that is intentionally false and designed to cause harm (Wardle, 2020), to better describe and analyse attempts to shape perceptions and organise political alignment in the platform era (Klinger, Kreiss, & Mutsvairo, 2023).
By the end of this project in the spring of 2026, I propose a new analytical framework that builds upon prior conceptualisations of propaganda in the 21st century like computational (Woolley & Howard, 2018) and participatory propaganda (Asmolov, 2019¹; Wanless & Berk, 2020²). It is called postdigital propaganda. The following pages trace the academic journey towards this framework by applying and testing existing frameworks on a variety of different empirical scenarios to analyse and understand platform phenomena that are easily overlooked or dismissed as niche, absurd, or irrelevant like soldiers engaging in everyday skits soundtracked by Minions, fan-edits of politicians remixing television footage from the 1990s, or AI-generated imagery of babies flying on eagles.
None of these qualify as disinformation in a strict sense. Yet something politically consequential is happening in them, and disinformation offers no way to see it. Stepping back from disinformation meant returning to the much older and broader concept: propaganda. Unlike mis- and disinformation, propaganda is not solely organised around the question of whether content is true or false — it is organised around the question of how communicative environments are structured to produce political alignment. The term propaganda originates in the seventeenth century with the establishment of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide by Pope Gregory XV in 1622, an institution created to coordinate the global dissemination of Catholic doctrine during the Counter-Reformation (Jowett & O'Donnell, 2018). Propaganda carries a long and contested research tradition, and the early 21st century has seen a proliferation of concepts designed to capture its contemporary forms. Concepts such as computational propaganda (Woolley & Howard, 2018) and participatory propaganda (Wanless & Berk, 2020; Asmolov, 2019) were developed to explain how propaganda operates in digital information environments. This dissertation builds on that research tradition. However, these frameworks emerged in an earlier phase of the platform ecosystem, which has since undergone significant technological and epistemic transformations that they were not designed to capture.

Algorithmic curation has increasingly displaced the social graph as the dominant organisational logic of platforms. Where content once travelled primarily through networks of social connection, it now circulates through recommendation systems that select for affective intensity and behavioural engagement — dynamics not introduced by algorithmic curation, but always present in how platforms organised attention. What shifted is that an external system now continuously reads, targets, and deepens each user's affective state through feedback loops between behaviour and algorithmic output, making affective resonance not one feature of platform logic but its constitutive condition.
Generative AI has expanded the volume and velocity of content production at a scale and speed that were previously structurally impossible. At the same time it has destabilised what counts as evidence: synthetic images, voices, and video can now be produced without any real-world referent, weakening the assumption that representation corresponds to event. These shifts exemplify what Fendt (2025) calls vibocracy — a condition in which affective resonance increasingly supplements or displaces epistemic verification as a criterion of political credibility. This condition is observable with particular clarity in TikTok's platform ecology, where the cases examined here show affective register consistently determining circulation outcomes independently of factual content. Under these conditions, the question of who produced what, and with what intent, becomes structurally secondary to the question of what is visible, amplifiable, and politically productive.
Existing digital-era frameworks illuminate what is at stake, but they do not fully theorise these dynamics at the structural level required by postdigital conditions. Computational propaganda traces the strategic manipulation of information flows to identifiable political actors (Woolley & Howard, 2018), while participatory propaganda captures the co-option and co-production dynamics through which audiences become agents of dissemination and meaning-making (Asmolov, 2019; Wanless & Berk, 2020). Yet neither framework accounts for platform infrastructures that process orchestrated and spontaneous content through the same algorithmic logic, nor for affective dynamics that determine visibility independently of who produced the content or why. The soldier dancing in uniform, the fan edit of a politician, the AI-generated image of a baby on an eagle — all circulate, resonate, and produce political effects through the same mechanisms of affective reward and visibility modulation. Under postdigital conditions, this mechanism is no longer a feature of platform design but its constitutive logic — the recursive infrastructural process through which platform ecologies continuously recalibrate what is visible, amplifiable, and politically resonant — regardless of the intent behind any individual contribution. These dynamics point to a structural condition that emerged after existing theoretical frameworks were developed — and that they were therefore not built to theorise.
The term postdigital propaganda, as I derive and develop it, names a structural configuration that the empirical material kept pointing toward: platform infrastructure, platformized affect, participatory recursion, and synthetic plausibility interacting to produce political alignment in ways that existing frameworks could not capture. This dissertation asks not how individual persuasive acts operate, but how platform infrastructures organise the communicative environments in which postdigital propaganda becomes possible.
Postdigital signals a theoretical claim: that digital media are no longer disruptive or exceptional — the disruption, as Cramer (2015) argues, has already occurred. Following Negroponte's (1998) anticipation that the digital would eventually become as unremarkable as air and water, platforms now operate as ambient infrastructural environments rather than as a distinct sphere of communication (Couldry & Hepp, 2017).
Under these conditions, propaganda cannot be adequately theorised as a content problem of identifiable messages to be detected and removed — a claim the following chapters develop through the concept of postdigital propaganda.
TikTok is the empirical site through which this dissertation makes these postdigital dynamics observable. With approximately 1.59 billion monthly active users in 2025 (Statista, 2025) and 20% of Americans now regularly getting news there — up from 3% in 2020 (McClain & Eddy, 2026) — TikTok has become a primary infrastructure of political information for significant portions of the electorate. Yet TikTok users are more likely to encounter humorous content and opinions related to current events than news articles or breaking news (McClain & Eddy, 2026). TikTok’s specific platform logic — an interest graph rather than a social graph, an algorithmically driven recommender system, a participatory architecture of audio memes and edits that makes affective remixing structurally native, and a growing volume of labelled and unlabelled AI-generated videos — exemplifies what Gerbaudo (2024) identifies as a second generation of social media, in which algorithmically constructed ‘clustered publics’ replace the networked publics of explicit social connection. This configuration makes it a theoretically productive site for observing propaganda under postdigital conditions.
Postdigital propaganda is not the starting point of this dissertation, but its conclusion. The following chapters trace the empirical path through which it was reached and further elaborate the term.
2. Postdigital Propaganda
The prefix post in postdigital makes its first appearance in the abstract of the second paper of this dissertation. It is not yet combined with propaganda, but with warfare. I hesitated before adding it: the prefix felt more rhetorical than analytical, a marker of novelty rather than a generator of insight. Yet as empirical cases accumulated that could not be adequately explained by existing frameworks, the term postdigital proved its analytical worth. As Jandrić et al. acknowledge, the postdigital “is hard to define; messy; unpredictable; digital and analog; technological and non-technological; biological and informational” (Jandrić et al., 2018:895) — a term, as Cramer and Jandrić (2021) put it “that sucks but is useful”.
This chapter develops that argument. It moves from pre-digital to digital to postdigital propaganda — not as a chronological narrative but as a sequence of infrastructural transformations that reorganised the conditions under which propaganda operates. It identifies the limits of existing digital-era frameworks and proposes a working definition of postdigital propaganda.
2.1 From Propaganda to Postdigital Propaganda
The forms of propaganda have always been constrained and enabled by the communicative technologies available. The pre-digital phase of 20th century propaganda research emerged within the comparatively stable architecture of broadcast mass media and was shaped by them. Lasswell’s (1927) analysis of wartime propaganda defined propaganda as a strategic effort by political elites to mobilise and manage mass publics through centralised communication. Bernays’ (1928) concept of engineering consent similarly assumed a mass media environment in which a small number of actors could influence large audiences through one-to-many communication. Ellul’s (1973) theory of total propaganda argued that modern technological societies produce propaganda as a structural condition rather than a matter of individual intent—a sociological phenomenon in which the media environment, through continuous saturation, organises political alignment independently of any single orchestrating actor. Herman and Chomsky’s (1988) propaganda model analysed how structural and economic constraints within large media institutions systematically shape news production and public discourse. As Bussemer (2008) argues, despite their theoretical differences — ranging from mass psychology to political economy — these approaches were developed within broadly similar broadcast-era media environments, characterised by a relatively stable separation between producers and audiences with mass media as gatekeepers in a sender-receiver model.
The expansion of the internet and the rise of networked platforms destabilised key assumptions of broadcast-era propaganda models. The comparatively stable sender- receiver architecture gave way to networked information environments characterised by distributed production, algorithmic circulation, and what Phillips and Milner (2021) describe as an 'infinite yet polluted' media ecology — reorienting research toward questions of network dynamics, platform logic, and hybrid media systems.

Benkler, Faris, and Roberts (2018) analysed partisan media ecosystems, demonstrating how network structure and asymmetric media dynamics explain the circulation of propaganda; Woolley and Howard (2018) conceptualised computational propaganda, foregrounding automated amplification and algorithmic distribution; Wanless and Berk (2020) examined coordinated information operations in hybrid media systems, attending to participatory and cross-platform dynamics. Together, these frameworks advanced beyond linear sender–receiver models by recognising the distributed, networked, and computational character of contemporary propaganda.
Yet across these approaches, the source of propaganda effects remains analytically anchored in strategic actors operating within digital systems. Platforms are recognised as shaping amplification and visibility, but they tend to appear as environments through which influence travels rather than as generative mechanisms that pre-structure the conditions under which influence becomes possible. The emphasis remains on who coordinates, who manipulates, who amplifies, and who misleads.
This limitation becomes visible in what can be described as a postdigital condition, in which digital media no longer function as a distinct sphere but increasingly operate as the ambient infrastructure of social life (Cramer 2015; Jandrić et al. 2018). The concept of deep mediatization (Couldry & Hepp 2017; Hepp 2019) provides the sociological grounding: media do not merely transmit social processes but serve as infrastructural forces that recursively transform the ways in which social practices, institutions, and power relations are organised.
Under these conditions, platforms operate as programmable, datafied infrastructures that modulate visibility, participation, and attention through recursive feedback loops between user behaviour and algorithmic systems. Research on TikTok-native practices demonstrates how sharing itself functions as a multilayered feedback loop in which affect, data capture, and embodied imitation become infrastructurally entangled (Pilipets 2023; Geboers & Pilipets 2024). Persuasion is reorganised because the conditions of visibility and 6 participation are continuously recalibrated through the interaction of algorithmic governance and user behaviour — a recursive dynamic whose effects restructure social and political life beyond the platform (Couldry & Hepp, 2017; Geboers & Bösch, 2025).
At the same time, advances in generative AI and synthetic media introduce an additional epistemic shift. Synthetic political imagery and speech can now be generated without requiring a direct empirical referent, weakening the evidentiary link between representation and event (Groh et al. 2024).
The same platforms that enable this epistemic uncertainty also enable its exploitation. As Thorsten Quandt's concept of dark participation demonstrates, participatory affordances enable not only deliberative engagement but also trolling, harassment, coordinated disinformation, and ideologically driven mobilisation (Quandt 2018; Quandt & Klapproth 2023). Such practices are not external distortions of an otherwise democratic participatory sphere but constitute recurring forms of participation within it. The traditional distinction between producer and audience no longer holds: users simultaneously consume, perform, coordinate, and generate data within the same environment, while the synthetic epistemic shift described above further dissolves the boundary between human- and machine- generated expression. Persuasion therefore unfolds less as episodic transmission and more as a continuous process in which platform infrastructure, algorithmic governance, and user participation interact to produce political effects that exceed the intentions of any individual participant.
Postdigital propaganda names this constellation of structural transformations. It does not replace digital-era frameworks but re-specifies them: under postdigital conditions, platform infrastructures, affective dynamics, participatory recursion, and synthetic media interact to organise political alignment in ways that cannot be adequately captured by any single explanatory framework. What shifts is not simply scale, speed, or the co-productive role of audiences, but the operative locus of persuasion: from the strategic intentions of identifiable actors toward the structural conditions that organise political alignment independently of any single actor's intent. The basic unit of propaganda is no longer the message but the participatory infrastructure through which affective resonance is produced, distributed, and stabilised.
This shift is not absolute — strategic actors continue to operate and messages continue to circulate — but it is structural. Under postdigital conditions, the efficacy of strategic intervention is increasingly determined by how well it fits the affective and participatory logics of the infrastructural ecology rather than by the quality of its arguments or the accuracy of its claims.

2.2 The Limits of Existing Frameworks
The digital-era frameworks that emerged in response to networked political communication — computational propaganda, participatory propaganda, hybrid media systems analysis — represent genuine theoretical advances. By foregrounding platform dynamics, coordinated amplification, and the co-productive role of audiences, they moved decisively beyond transmission models that treated persuasion as a linear process of strategic encoding and passive reception. The question is not whether these frameworks illuminate the phenomena this dissertation examines — they do — but whether they theorise those phenomena at the structural level that postdigital conditions require. Four limitations suggest they do not adequately.
First, the dominant frameworks recognise that platforms shape political communication, but theorise platform architecture as an environment through which strategic actors operate rather than as the generative mechanism of persuasion itself. Where environment implies a space within which things happen, ecology implies a system that constitutes the conditions under which political communication becomes possible. Lin (2024) identifies this as a “new wine in old bottles” problem — the observation that computational propaganda research, despite its digital framing, remains anchored in traditional transmission paradigms, with much of its empirical focus on bot detection and coordinated inauthentic behaviour during the 2016 US electoral cycle (e.g., Woolley & Howard, 2018). Analyses of the broader media ecosystem of that moment, such as Network Propaganda, pointed instead to asymmetric partisan amplification within networked media systems. Lin's own expanded theory (2024) represents the most recent attempt to address this limitation, broadening the analytical scope beyond state actors to include commodification, privatisation, connectivity, and virality. Yet even here, platform algorithms appear primarily as amplification channels — mechanisms that extend the reach of strategically produced content — rather than as generative infrastructures that prestructure the conditions under which any content achieves political salience. TikTok makes this distinction analytically decisive. Its recommendation logic, sonic affordances, and remix infrastructure are not merely channels through which propaganda travels — they are conditions of what propaganda can be.
Second, the actor model, even where it acknowledges co-production, theorises participation as a strategy deployed by elites rather than as a structural condition produced by platforms. Asmolov's distinction between co-option and co-production represents a significant advance (Asmolov, 2019; Wanless & Berk, 2020), and Bjola and Papadakis (2020) develop this further through their microsphere/macrosphere framework, demonstrating how citizens simultaneously consume and produce disinformation as it travels from everyday online interaction toward political decision-making. Yet across frameworks, participation remains analytically anchored in the diffusion of strategically introduced content — elites or foreign actors initiate, audiences carry. Quandt's (2018) dark participation concept offers a valuable corrective by systematising the full range of negative, manipulative, and destructive participatory forms — demonstrating that harmful political consequences can emerge from actors with varied motivations, not only coordinated elites. Quandt and Klapproth (2023) explicitly call for integrative theories of the conditions of participation that move beyond actor-level typologies. What remains undertheorised is precisely those conditions: the platform infrastructures that make politically consequential participation possible — not as a choice made by identifiable actors, but as a structural outcome of how platforms organise visibility, engagement, and affective reward independently of any actor’s intent.
Postdigital propaganda therefore does not replace participatory propaganda — it re- specifies it. The question here is not whether users participate but what platform infrastructures do with their participation. Participatory propaganda frameworks identify the political productivity of participation; postdigital propaganda asks why participation produces alignment in some configurations and mockery in others, locating the answer not in the participants but in the platform conditions under which participation occurs. The FDP misfire documented in Paper 3 (Bösch, 2026) provides a clear empirical illustration of this distinction. In October 2024, FDP politician Christian Dürr participated in a viral Gen-Z trend on TikTok, deploying platform vernaculars to project youthful authenticity — and generated widespread mockery rather than political resonance. Participation was present, vernaculars were deployed, yet the platform ecology produced inversion rather than alignment. What failed was not participation but the fit between Dürr’s intervention and the platform’s affective conditions — a distinction participatory propaganda frameworks are not designed to make.
Third, affect is increasingly observed as politically significant across the literature, but theorised primarily as a property of content or an outcome of user practice rather than as an infrastructural condition. Papacharissi (2015) moves furthest in this direction, theorising affect as constitutive of how networked publics form through platform-mediated storytelling. Her analysis of hashtag streams, retweet structures, and connective practices demonstrates how soft structures of feeling — shaped by platform affordances — produce affective intensities that frame movements and disrupt dominant political narratives. Yet her infrastructure is the affordance layer: the expressive and connective structures through which users collaboratively produce affective publics. What it does not theorise is the algorithmic governance layer beneath it: the recommendation systems that translate aggregated user behaviour into differential visibility through recursive feedback loops that no individual actor produces or intends (Bucher & Helmond, 2018; Gillespie, 2018). The affective conditions that result are structural conditions produced by the system rather than outputs of any identifiable sender or public. Affect, in other words, is not only something that users bring to platforms; it is something that platform infrastructures continuously condition, modulate, and recalibrate.
Fourth, many influential strands of the existing literature remain implicitly organised around truth and falsity as the operative criterion, even where affective dynamics are acknowledged. Much computational propaganda research identifies accuracy-distortion as the primary mechanism of harm; many participatory propaganda frameworks focus on the co-production and circulation of misleading content. The emergence of synthetic media — generative AI content produced through algorithmic synthesis rather than the documentation of real events (de Seta, Pohjonen & Knuutila, 2024) — breaks this criterion at its foundation: content that was never meant to document reality cannot be evaluated by how accurately it does so. Existing terminology in this space, from deepfakes to cheapfakes to softfakes, remains organised around questions of deception and authenticity, presupposing that the primary harm lies in misrepresentation rather than in affective alignment. Yet as Koebler (2024) demonstrates through AI-generated imagery circulating during Hurricane Helene, users evaluate synthetic content less through factual verification than through affective resonance: what determines its political efficacy is not whether it is true but whether it is felt as true. Under vibocratic conditions — in which legitimacy is organised through resonance rather than epistemic verification (McIntyre, 2018; Fendt, 2025) — synthetic content need not deceive to align. It operates instead by producing mythic political atmospheres and plausible imaginaries that bypass factual evaluation. What is decisive is no longer whether content is true, but whether it works — a condition that post-truth scholarship has diagnosed at the level of politics (McIntyre, 2018) but that existing propaganda frameworks do not yet fully theorise at the level of platform infrastructure.
Together, these four limitations point to a common deficit: existing frameworks theorise propaganda as something actors do within media environments rather than as something platform infrastructures condition and structure.The argument is not that these frameworks are wrong, but that they are partial — each capturing a distinct dimension of contemporary propaganda. Under postdigital conditions, all these dimensions are active at the same time and they reinforce each other.
Computational propaganda theorises strategic coordination; participatory propaganda theorises audience co-production; affective publics theorises networked sentiment as constitutive of political formation; and synthetic media breaks both the actor and authenticity assumptions on which all three depend. What remains undertheorised is their convergence — the structural condition in which all four operate simultaneously through the same platform logic, processed by the same algorithmic governance, producing political effects that exceed what any single framework was designed to theorise.
The 2025 German federal election provides a case in which all four limitations converge. The AfD’s dominance on TikTok was produced not through centralised content strategy alone but through a decentralised production ecology of up to 12,790 affiliated fan accounts whose density generated algorithmic amplification no opponent could replicate through strategic coordination alone (Wetzel & Kiess, 2025, as cited in Bösch, 2026). Its affective vibe politics spread through a hybrid ecosystem in which authentic participatory 11 circulation — fan edits, audio memes, grassroots co-production — drove reach that coordinated inauthentic behaviour alone cannot explain (Bösch, 2026). Its emotional resonance operated independently of policy substance. And its campaign audio included a likely AI-generated sound that circulated in over 9,000 videos, producing an affective atmosphere of political urgency that bypassed factual evaluation entirely (Bösch, 2026). These features exceed what any single existing framework can account for: together they illustrate that platform infrastructure, participatory dynamics, affective conditions, and synthetic media are not parallel phenomena but structurally interdependent dimensions of the same political communication ecology.
This convergence of dynamics is not confined to the empirical cases examined here. In December 2025 NATO’s Chief Scientist identified cognitive warfare as a strategic priority for the Alliance (Blatný & Søndergaard, 2025). This formulation parallels the dynamics documented here: whereas earlier frameworks such as information warfare focused on controlling or distorting information, cognitive warfare shifts attention to shaping perception, decision-making, and behaviour—regardless of whether the content involved is true or false. A soldier’s skit, a fan edit, or an AI-generated image of a baby riding an eagle are precisely the phenomena that earlier vocabulary was not designed to theorise.
The convergence between NATO’s strategic framing and the empirical findings presented here points to a broader transformation: political influence is increasingly structured by the conditions of the communication environment rather than by individual messages alone. This shift becomes visible across two registers. In democratic electoral contexts, Fendt’s (2025) concept of vibocracy captures its affective dimension, in which political legitimacy is performed through resonance, atmosphere, and feeling rather than negotiated through shared evidence. In conflict contexts, cognitive warfare captures its strategic dimension: the target is no longer what populations believe, but how they perceive, decide, and act.
Both point to the same underlying shift — away from content toward condition, and from message toward ecology — from what platforms transmit toward what platform infrastructures organise.
Postdigital propaganda is proposed here as an analytical framework for theorising how platform infrastructures, affective dynamics, participatory practices, and synthetic media ecologies interact to organise political influence under postdigital conditions.
2.3 Postdigital Propaganda: A Working Definition
The choice of the prefix postdigital rather than alternatives such as platform or algorithmic propaganda requires justification. Terms like platform propaganda or algorithmic propaganda would accurately name two of the conditions this dissertation theorises — infrastructure and recommendation logic — but they would leave the deeper structural shift unnamed. What distinguishes the current moment is not simply that propaganda now travels through platforms or is amplified by algorithms, but that the digital infrastructure enabling these processes has become the continuous environment within which political life is organised rather than a distinct communicative sphere — as unremarkable and constitutive as electricity or running water.
Postdigital propaganda refers to the infrastructurally conditioned organisation of political alignment within algorithmically governed platform ecologies. Strategic and non-strategic actors contribute to this process, but what their contributions become is shaped less by individual intent than by platform infrastructure, platformized affect, participatory recursion, and synthetic plausibility. Each of these four dimensions is elaborated in Section 4 through the empirical cases the dissertation examines.
Political alignment, as used here, is a property of the platform ecology rather than a measurable outcome at the level of individual users. It becomes observable when three conditions co-occur: ecological saturation, in which a political imaginary spreads until it achieves ambient density; directional coherence, in which this spread consistently reinforces similar political orientation without evidence of institutional coordination; and permeation, in which content reaches algorithmically delivered feeds of users with no prior affiliation to the originating community.
Each condition alone is insufficient to produce alignment. Saturation and coherence within a bounded niche describe community reinforcement; permeation without coherence describes ordinary algorithmic amplification. Postdigital propaganda becomes observable as these three conditions converge, with full alignment representing their strongest co-occurrence.
Second, the actor model, even where it acknowledges co-production, theorises participation as a strategy deployed by elites rather than as a structural condition produced by platforms. Asmolov's distinction between co-option and co-production represents a significant advance (Asmolov, 2019; Wanless & Berk, 2020), and Bjola and Papadakis (2020) develop this further through their microsphere/macrosphere framework, demonstrating how citizens simultaneously consume and produce disinformation as it travels from everyday online interaction toward political decision-making. Yet across frameworks, participation remains analytically anchored in the diffusion of strategically introduced content — elites or foreign actors initiate, audiences carry. Quandt's (2018) dark participation concept offers a valuable corrective by systematising the full range of negative, manipulative, and destructive participatory forms — demonstrating that harmful political consequences can emerge from actors with varied motivations, not only coordinated elites. Quandt and Klapproth (2023) explicitly call for integrative theories of the conditions of participation that move beyond actor-level typologies. What remains undertheorised is precisely those conditions: the platform infrastructures that make politically consequential participation possible — not as a choice made by identifiable actors, but as a structural outcome of how platforms organise visibility, engagement, and affective reward independently of any actor’s intent.
Postdigital propaganda therefore does not replace participatory propaganda — it re- specifies it. The question here is not whether users participate but what platform infrastructures do with their participation. Participatory propaganda frameworks identify the political productivity of participation; postdigital propaganda asks why participation produces alignment in some configurations and mockery in others, locating the answer not in the participants but in the platform conditions under which participation occurs. The FDP misfire documented in Paper 3 (Bösch, 2026) provides a clear empirical illustration of this distinction. In October 2024, FDP politician Christian Dürr participated in a viral Gen-Z trend on TikTok, deploying platform vernaculars to project youthful authenticity — and generated widespread mockery rather than political resonance. Participation was present, vernaculars were deployed, yet the platform ecology produced inversion rather than alignment. What failed was not participation but the fit between Dürr’s intervention and the platform’s affective conditions — a distinction participatory propaganda frameworks are not designed to make.
Third, affect is increasingly observed as politically significant across the literature, but theorised primarily as a property of content or an outcome of user practice rather than as an infrastructural condition. Papacharissi (2015) moves furthest in this direction, theorising affect as constitutive of how networked publics form through platform-mediated storytelling. Her analysis of hashtag streams, retweet structures, and connective practices demonstrates how soft structures of feeling — shaped by platform affordances — produce affective intensities that frame movements and disrupt dominant political narratives. Yet her infrastructure is the affordance layer: the expressive and connective structures through which users collaboratively produce affective publics. What it does not theorise is the algorithmic governance layer beneath it: the recommendation systems that translate aggregated user behaviour into differential visibility through recursive feedback loops that no individual actor produces or intends (Bucher & Helmond, 2018; Gillespie, 2018). The affective conditions that result are structural conditions produced by the system rather than outputs of any identifiable sender or public. Affect, in other words, is not only something that users bring to platforms; it is something that platform infrastructures continuously condition, modulate, and recalibrate.
Fourth, many influential strands of the existing literature remain implicitly organised around truth and falsity as the operative criterion, even where affective dynamics are acknowledged. Much computational propaganda research identifies accuracy-distortion as the primary mechanism of harm; many participatory propaganda frameworks focus on the co-production and circulation of misleading content. The emergence of synthetic media — generative AI content produced through algorithmic synthesis rather than the documentation of real events (de Seta, Pohjonen & Knuutila, 2024) — breaks this criterion at its foundation: content that was never meant to document reality cannot be evaluated by how accurately it does so. Existing terminology in this space, from deepfakes to cheapfakes to softfakes, remains organised around questions of deception and authenticity, presupposing that the primary harm lies in misrepresentation rather than in affective alignment. Yet as Koebler (2024) demonstrates through AI-generated imagery circulating during Hurricane Helene, users evaluate synthetic content less through factual verification than through affective resonance: what determines its political efficacy is not whether it is true but whether it is felt as true. Under vibocratic conditions — in which legitimacy is organised through resonance rather than epistemic verification (McIntyre, 2018; Fendt, 2025) — synthetic content need not deceive to align. It operates instead by producing mythic political atmospheres and plausible imaginaries that bypass factual evaluation. What is decisive is no longer whether content is true, but whether it works — a condition that post-truth scholarship has diagnosed at the level of politics (McIntyre, 2018) but that existing propaganda frameworks do not yet fully theorise at the level of platform infrastructure.
Together, these four limitations point to a common deficit: existing frameworks theorise propaganda as something actors do within media environments rather than as something platform infrastructures condition and structure.The argument is not that these frameworks are wrong, but that they are partial — each capturing a distinct dimension of contemporary propaganda. Under postdigital conditions, all these dimensions are active at the same time and they reinforce each other.
Computational propaganda theorises strategic coordination; participatory propaganda theorises audience co-production; affective publics theorises networked sentiment as constitutive of political formation; and synthetic media breaks both the actor and authenticity assumptions on which all three depend. What remains undertheorised is their convergence — the structural condition in which all four operate simultaneously through the same platform logic, processed by the same algorithmic governance, producing political effects that exceed what any single framework was designed to theorise.
The 2025 German federal election provides a case in which all four limitations converge. The AfD’s dominance on TikTok was produced not through centralised content strategy alone but through a decentralised production ecology of up to 12,790 affiliated fan accounts whose density generated algorithmic amplification no opponent could replicate through strategic coordination alone (Wetzel & Kiess, 2025, as cited in Bösch, 2026). Its affective vibe politics spread through a hybrid ecosystem in which authentic participatory 11 circulation — fan edits, audio memes, grassroots co-production — drove reach that coordinated inauthentic behaviour alone cannot explain (Bösch, 2026). Its emotional resonance operated independently of policy substance. And its campaign audio included a likely AI-generated sound that circulated in over 9,000 videos, producing an affective atmosphere of political urgency that bypassed factual evaluation entirely (Bösch, 2026). These features exceed what any single existing framework can account for: together they illustrate that platform infrastructure, participatory dynamics, affective conditions, and synthetic media are not parallel phenomena but structurally interdependent dimensions of the same political communication ecology.
This convergence of dynamics is not confined to the empirical cases examined here. In December 2025 NATO’s Chief Scientist identified cognitive warfare as a strategic priority for the Alliance (Blatný & Søndergaard, 2025). This formulation parallels the dynamics documented here: whereas earlier frameworks such as information warfare focused on controlling or distorting information, cognitive warfare shifts attention to shaping perception, decision-making, and behaviour—regardless of whether the content involved is true or false. A soldier’s skit, a fan edit, or an AI-generated image of a baby riding an eagle are precisely the phenomena that earlier vocabulary was not designed to theorise.
The convergence between NATO’s strategic framing and the empirical findings presented here points to a broader transformation: political influence is increasingly structured by the conditions of the communication environment rather than by individual messages alone. 3. Research Design
This dissertation began with hours spent on TikTok trying to comprehend what was happening in Ukraine before and immediately after the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022 — experiencing a conflict through a multiplicity of perspectives, from dancing soldiers to propagandistic sound memes, that I had not encountered on any other platform. The research logic across all four papers follows from that origin: driven by a recurring sense that political content on the platform exceeded what existing frameworks could adequately name, across contexts as different as wartime conflict, electoral campaigns, and synthetic media ecologies. The methods documented in this chapter are formalizations of that practice.
3.1 The Dachschrift
The cumulative format was a deliberate choice. Each paper was designed to capture a different context, actor configuration, and analytical perspective on propaganda, while remaining publishable in its own right. The argument that connects them became fully visible only in retrospect: what the four papers document separately is not merely four related phenomena but a single structural condition appearing across contexts that differ in the dimensions alternative explanations would normally invoke. The Dachschrift is therefore not a summary of the papers but the theoretical argument their accumulation makes possible.
3.2 Methods
The four papers that constitute the empirical core of this dissertation are summarised in Table 1. The papers are designed contrastively rather than additively, maximising analytical variation across the dimensions most relevant to the postdigital propaganda framework: two conflict contexts (Ukraine, Gaza) and two non-conflict contexts (German federal election, cross-national synthetic media study); two cases primarily involving state or institutional actors (IDF, US federal government) and two involving decentralised or unofficial actors (TikTok sound networks, fan accounts and AI accounts).
This contrastive design logic is the foundation of the structural argument. Read retrospectively, it reveals whether the four dimensions of the postdigital propaganda framework — platform infrastructure, platformized affect, participatory recursion, and synthetic plausibility — appear consistently across empirical contexts where competing explanations would normally expect different dynamics.
The argument is not that each paper arrives at the same empirical finding, nor that each paper was designed within the postdigital framework — the framework emerged retrospectively from the accumulation of empirical work, and the theoretical register of each paper reflects the point in that process at which it was written. What the contrastive design makes visible is that the empirical phenomena documented across all four papers exceed the frameworks through which they were initially approached — and become fully legible only when read through the analytical coordinates the dissertation develops as a whole.

All four papers share a common methodological orientation that secures cross-paper comparability. The walkthrough method (Light, Burgess, & Duguay, 2018) serves as the primary data-gathering approach across papers 1, 2, and 3, and informs the exploratory orientation of paper 4. The method involves systematic, researcher-led engagement with platform interfaces to examine technological mechanisms, embedded cultural references, and the organizational logics shaping user experience and content visibility.
The research question concerns how platform mechanisms constitute propaganda as a structural condition, not how frequently specific content items circulate or how widely specific messages reach. That distinction determines the method: the affordance logics, vernacular practices, and ambient affective atmospheres that organise postdigital propaganda are not legible in circulation metadata. They require a researcher positioned inside the platform environment rather than observing its outputs from outside. Purposive sampling (Sandelowski, 1995) extends this logic: cases are selected for analytical density and information richness rather than statistical representativeness, on the grounds that the goal is demonstrating the co-presence of a structural configuration across empirically distinct contexts rather than measuring its frequency. Paper 3 extends this common core with platform ethnography — sustained immersive observation of platform cultures, vernaculars, and interaction patterns. Paper 4 employs comparative qualitative case analysis across three actor accounts.
On researcher positionality: across all four papers, the walkthrough analysis was conducted by the lead researcher engaging with algorithmically personalized platforms whose content environments were partly constituted by the researcher's own behavioural profile. This is an intrinsic condition of walkthrough-based platform research. At the same time, the researcher's prior immersion in the platform environment was a condition of the research's analytical sensitivity — familiarity with vernacular practices and affective registers that would not have been legible to an outside observer. The partial mitigation of positionality effects through systematic hashtag searches and purposive case selection introduces analytical structure independent of algorithmic delivery — but cannot fully resolve what is carried forward as a constitutive condition of the research design rather than a correctable error.
3.3 Empirical Scope and Limitations
TikTok is the primary platform across all four papers. Its sound-driven architecture, short- form vertical video format, algorithmic For You Page, and vernacular affordances — reusable sounds, duets, stitches, editing tools — make it the site where the mechanisms of postdigital propaganda are most directly observable for the current research question. Paper 4 (Bösch, forthcoming) extends the empirical scope to Instagram, justified by the cross-actor comparison at the center of that paper: including Trump and the White House alongside @dobermanncloe1 on TikTok strengthens the structural argument by providing preliminary evidence that comparable dynamics may emerge on platforms sharing similar engagement logics.
Across the four papers, the unit of analysis is not individual pieces of content, actors, or platform features in isolation, but observable configurations of propaganda dynamics within platform environments. Individual videos, sounds, accounts, or campaigns function as analytical entry points that make these dynamics visible. The analysis therefore focuses on how platform infrastructures, affective circulation, participatory practices, and synthetic media interact in specific empirical instances to generate observable patterns of political alignment.
The temporal scope spans 2022 to 2025, from the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the October 2023 Gaza war through the 2025 German federal election and the first months of the second Trump administration. The four papers constitute a multiple-case study of a structural condition documented at different points within this period, not a longitudinal study of change across it.
Two limitations are carried forward into the theoretical synthesis. First, the research design focuses on observable platform practices rather than internal production processes. Without access to campaign organizations, platform moderation systems, or internal decision-making structures, the study cannot determine how specific actors intentionally design propaganda interventions or how platform companies shape these dynamics through internal governance mechanisms. Second, the research does not measure users interpretation, persuasion, or behavioural effects. Engagement metrics and participatory practices are treated as indicators of participatory uptake rather than as evidence of attitude change or political persuasion. The study therefore examines the conditions under which propaganda circulates rather than its effects. The four papers that follow are therefore interpreted in the synthesis not as isolated case studies but as empirical observations of the same structural condition under these scope constraints.
4. Empirical Synthesis: Four Dimensions of Postdigital Propaganda
4.1 Structure and Logic of the Synthesis
The four sub-chapters that follow share a common argumentative structure. Each begins from empirical phenomena that existing digital-era frameworks could observe but not fully account for. This is not because those frameworks are wrong, but because their theoretical architecture does not capture the structural level at which postdigital propaganda operates. Each then identifies the specific assumption within prior theory that the finding unsettles: that infrastructure is merely a condition rather than a generative mechanism, that affect is produced through user practice rather than by algorithmic infrastructure, that propaganda effects are attributable to strategic actors rather than emergent from participatory structure, and that propaganda operates through factual deception rather than the accumulation of affective plausibility.
Each section closes by showing how the empirical record requires the concept the framework provides — infrastructure as generative mechanism, platformized affect, participatory recursion, and synthetic plausibility — demonstrating that existing frameworks cannot account for what the cases document without it. The movement in each case is the same: from what the papers found, through what prior frameworks cannot explain, to what the empirical record requires. Several cases recur across sections because the same phenomena are analytically multidimensional: each case is read through a different analytical lens to demonstrate that the four dimensions are co-present within single empirical instances. Each dimension therefore corresponds to empirical dynamics documented in one or more of the four papers, which together reveal the structural configuration the concept of postdigital propaganda names.
4.2 Platform Infrastructure as Generative Mechanism
Existing frameworks for computational propaganda, most prominently articulated by Woolley and Howard (2018), center analytical attention on strategic actors who deploy computational tools — bots, automation, and algorithmic targeting — to influence political communication. Platforms in this account structure the communication environment, but propaganda remains analytically tied to the intentional activities of organised actors who deploy these techniques.The empirical record across the four papers challenges this assumption at multiple stages of the production–circulation cycle.
The “Russian warship go f*** yourself” sound page analysed in Paper 1 (Bösch & Divon, 2024) accumulated more than 80 billion views across derivative videos through a propagation mechanism that exceeded what any actor could have managed or controlled after the initial upload. TikTok’s sound page architecture automatically aggregates all videos using the same audio into a single feed, producing recursive visibility and circulation across thousands of derivative posts. The Ukrainian government was the origin actor with clear propagandistic intent, but the subsequent propagation phase shows no evidence of coordination or management by any institutional actor — operating instead through the platform's own recommendation logic and participatory vernaculars.
It is worth noting that Paper 1 analyses this phenomenon through the framework of computational propaganda, foregrounding strategic actors, semi-automated techniques, and the deliberate exploitation of platform features. The Dachschrift’s reading of the same empirical findings through the infrastructure dimension represents a retrospective synthetic move: the propagation dynamics Paper 1 documents exceed the actor-centred framework through which they were originally analysed, becoming more fully legible when platform infrastructure is theorised as a generative mechanism rather than merely an amplification channel.
While the Russian warship meme demonstrates infrastructure organizing the propagation phase of propaganda, the second case shows how the same infrastructural logic structures visibility even within an ongoing institutional communication strategy. Individual IDF soldier accounts achieved viewership more than seven times greater than the official IDF and Netanyahu accounts, as shown in Paper 2 (Bösch & Divon, 2026). This disparity is not evidence of institutional failure — the IDF actively encouraged and sanctioned soldiers' social media activity alongside its own official channels. What the gap reveals is that platform infrastructure differentially rewards vernacular form over broadcast form regardless of institutional intent: within the same coordinated strategy, content that conformed to platform vernacular logic achieved levels of visibility that official channels could not replicate.
The “Young Friedrich” edit documented in Paper 3 — an 11-second video by @conservo.de, an unofficial CDU-aligned account combining archival footage of Friedrich Merz with a slowed-down pop track — illustrates how platform infrastructure organises the intermediate stage of the production process. @conservo.de used archival footage the CDU itself had uploaded, recasting it through TikTok’s edit vernacular into an affective political portrait the party had not produced itself. What the sequence reveals is not the absence of institutional actors but a specific hierarchy between them: the party supplied the raw material without controlling the form it would take, while TikTok’s edit vernacular and affective infrastructure determined the form that achieved political resonance. The official actor ultimately adapted to that form rather than originating it. The terms “Merz Vibes” and “Aura” subsequently appeared in official CDU TikTok videos — the party adopted the affective vocabulary the platform ecology had produced rather than the vocabulary it had previously used in its own communication. The propaganda effect emerged from the interaction between platform vernacular logic and an unofficial actor's creative appropriation of officially supplied material.
Across the papers, platform infrastructure operates in two distinct modes: constitutive and amplificatory. In the IDF thirst trap case, infrastructure shaped what propaganda became, not merely how far it travelled: vernacular content achieved seven times the visibility of institutional equivalents within the same coordinated strategy, indicating that platform logics structured form independently of producer intent. In the Russian warship case, infrastructure massively extended the reach of strategically seeded content without altering its fundamental character. Both modes exceed the amplification model assumed in prior frameworks. The constitutive mode—most clearly visible in the IDF and Young Friedrich cases—represents the stronger claim: platform infrastructure does not merely carry propaganda but conditions what it can become.
4.3 Platformized Affect
Much of classical persuasion research treats affect as something messages produce in receivers — an emotional response that shapes attitudes and judgments (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986). Papacharissi's account of affective publics (2015) moves beyond this by showing that affect is not only a response to individual messages but something that emerges collectively through platform-mediated practices — hashtag streams, retweet structures, and connective storytelling. Affect, in this account, is constitutive of how publics form rather than a byproduct of how messages land.
What remains comparatively undertheorised in both accounts is the infrastructural layer beneath these practices: the recommendation systems that shape the distribution of visibility across content on platforms (Bucher & Helmond, 2018; Gillespie, 2018). Affect functions not only as an outcome of communication but as a ranking signal within algorithmic recommendation systems. Aggregated engagement behaviour feeds back into distribution, meaning that affective resonance becomes a structural condition of visibility rather than merely a response to content.
In this dissertation, platformized affect is identified through observable platform vernaculars and aesthetic registers that precede engagement outcomes. Indicators include the recurrent use of platform-native affective formats (e.g., dance challenges, thirst traps, slowed-down edits, lip-sync performance), aesthetic markers associated with specific affective registers (e.g., intimacy, humour, irony, or admiration), and stylistic conformity with dominant platform vernaculars such as short-form narrative compression, soundtrack-driven pacing, and meme-based audiovisual editing. These indicators are observable at the level of form and performance prior to circulation outcomes and therefore provide an analytical basis for identifying affective alignment or misalignment independent of engagement metrics.
The empirical analyses presented across Papers 2 and 3 exemplify this dynamic, though the same logic is visible in the affective charge driving the propagation of the Russian warship meme in Paper 1 and in the serial synthetic imagery of Paper 4 (Bösch, forthcoming), examined in section 4.5.
Paper 2 (Bösch & Divon, 2026) documents this in conflict communication. Female IDF soldiers posting dance challenges in dormitories, adopting duck face poses, wearing pink cat ear headbands over their uniforms — performing cuteness and relatability through platform vernaculars — translate military conflict into an ambient platform vibe. The affective register structures engagement before propagandistic intent becomes the primary frame of reception, with the platform rewarding the affective form first and folding military context into an atmosphere of relatability and desire rather than foregrounding it as political messaging.
In October 2024, FDP politician Christian Dürr participated in the “Gen-Z wrote the script” trend, delivering slang-filled lines intended to project youthful authenticity. Despite repeatedly invoking the word “vibe,” the video generated mockery rather than engagement. As Paper 3 (Bösch, 2026) documents, the content was not factually wrong; the affective register was — illustrating how platform-ambient affective conditions determine reception before content is evaluated.
The FDP misfire is therefore a particularly clear empirical anchor for the ambient affect argument — and a crucial negative case for the framework. Participatory vernaculars were deliberately deployed: the Gen-Z trend format, the slang, the explicit invocation of vibe. Intent was fully present. What was absent was not affective resonance but affective alignment: the video generated strong affective response — mockery, embarrassment, ridicule — which the platform amplified as engagement precisely because of its affective intensity, producing circulation that actively damaged rather than served the actor it was designed to benefit. Political alignment did not materialise — not because the content failed to circulate but because the infrastructure rewarded a register of feeling the actor did not intend and could not control. This is the postdigital condition in miniature: intent is repositioned rather than dissolved.
The Robrat HQ phenomenon shown in Paper 3 (Bösch, 2026) preceded the official Habeck account by months and produced a collective affective ecology — “Daddy Vibes,” “Kanzlerbabe,” #habeckcore — that the official account subsequently incorporated. A likely AI-generated AfD campaign sound circulated across more than 9,000 derivative videos, producing rhythmic political alignment through repeated participatory reuse rather than argumentative persuasion (Bösch, 2026). Neither affective ecology was centrally designed by the actors who ultimately benefited from it. Instead, both emerged through iterative participatory accumulation under algorithmic conditions, with elite actors aligning themselves with atmospheres whose origin and trajectory they did not control. What these examples collectively demonstrate is platformized affect as a structural condition of propaganda — not merely a response to content but a precondition of its 24 circulation. The IDF thirst trap corpus demonstrates this through affective alignment rewarded at scale; the FDP misfire reveals it through affective misalignment that produced circulation without political alignment; and the Robrat HQ shows it operating bottom-up, producing atmospheres that elite actors incorporated rather than originated. Across all three, affect structured what political communication could achieve beyond the strategic intentions that produced it.
4.4 Participatory Recursion
Wanless and Berk (2020) theorise non-elite actors as amplifiers of elite-initiated content — co-opted into spreading persuasive communications whose strategic origin remains with an organised propagandist. Asmolov (2019) moves closer to a co-production model, describing how digital affordances enable participation that can exceed any single actor’s control. Yet even here, the framework retains a residual sender-receiver logic in which elite actors initiate and non-elite actors extend, co-produce, or amplify. Both frameworks assume that the distinction between strategic origin and participatory extension remains analytically meaningful — that it is possible, in principle, to identify where propaganda begins and where participation takes over.
Paper 3 (Bösch, 2026) proposes a different starting point. In a platformized media ecology where the communicative capacities of users are technically comparable to those of institutional actors, the boundaries between producers, disseminators, and audiences dissolve — producing a hybrid communicative field characterised by the simultaneity of top-down, bottom-up, and horizontal dynamics. The distinction between strategic origin and participatory extension therefore does not collapse merely as a methodological complication; it collapses as the propaganda mechanism itself.
The empirical record across Papers 3 and 4 documents what that collapse looks like in its most developed form.
The AfD audio meme documented in Paper 3 (Bösch, 2026) demonstrates this most directly. A likely AI-generated voice intoning “AfD, Deutschland braucht die AfD” over layered beats circulated across more than 9,000 videos by February 2025. The original creator is unknown — the source video deleted, the sound released under multiple anonymous author names across platforms. The 9,000 videos combine authentic users lip-syncing, inauthentic accounts disseminating edits, and isolated official AfD accounts — all using the same sound, all contributing to the same propagation ecology. Their respective contributions cannot be meaningfully disentangled, not because the evidence is insufficient but because the ecology does not operate along that axis. All three alignment properties are most directly observable simultaneously: saturation across 9,000 derivative videos, directional coherence across uncoordinated pro-AfD accounts, and permeation through algorithmically delivered feeds of users with no prior party affiliation.
The Die Linke "you asshole" sound as analysed in Paper 3 (Bösch, 2026) reveals where persuasive labor now resides. By February 24, 2025, the original account had generated 14,000 likes, while the five most prominent derivative videos alone exceeded 1.2 million likes across 3,292 re-uses, predominantly by accounts presenting as young women lip-syncing with captions expressing personal approval. Jan van Aken, Die Linke’s top candidate whose speech provided the original sound, was recast as a sympathetic ally through captions and comments — a political meaning that emerged through participatory re-authorship rather than institutional communication. Non-elite actors therefore function not merely as amplifiers of elite messages but as the primary site at which those messages acquire political meaning.
The @whitehouse account documented in Paper 4 (Bösch, forthcoming) illustrates what this ecology looks like when elite actors have fully internalized its logic. Nine days after the arrest of a person on fentanyl-dealing charges, the official account of the United States government rendered that person as a Studio Ghibli anime figure while Trump appeared as a heroic counter-figure — the same visual idiom that non-elite creators were producing without institutional coordination across the same platform moment. State coercive action was translated into the ambient register of participatory platform culture.
Taken together, the cases discussed across this chapter illustrate how different stages of the propaganda ecology operate. The Russian warship meme demonstrates the same collapse at the level of propagation; the Die Linke sound at the level of persuasive labor; and the White House Ghibli posts at the level of production. Across these cases, the distinction between strategic origin and participatory extension collapses — not as a methodological problem but as the condition under which postdigital propaganda operates.
4.5 Synthetic Plausibility
Influential disinformation frameworks (e.g., Wardle & Derakhshan, 2017) organise analysis around the epistemic status of information, distinguishing between true and false content. Frameworks organised primarily around the true/false axis offer less analytical vocabulary for capturing the propaganda dynamics documented across the four papers: content circulates and produces political alignment through affective plausibility rather than factual deception.
Synthetic plausibility is distinct from platformized affect: where platformized affect names the infrastructural conditions under which affective resonance determines visibility, synthetic plausibility names the epistemic condition under which repeated aesthetic instantiation stabilises a political world as perceptually coherent — independently of whether that world corresponds to documentable reality. The mechanism is not deception but accumulation: not the falsification of individual claims but the construction of a felt political world through serial aesthetic repetition.
Synthetic plausibility does not originate with generative AI. Rather, AI completes a propaganda dynamic already visible in earlier platform practices: the stabilisation of political worlds through affective plausibility rather than factual verification. Propaganda has always operated through the construction of felt political realities — worlds in which certain actors, threats, and allegiances feel self-evident — rather than through the patient accumulation of verified evidence. What previously constrained this dynamic was the requirement that content maintain some indexical relationship to documentable reality: real events as narrative anchors, real bodies as footage, real figures as recognisable referents. Generative AI removes that final constraint — not by introducing a new propagandist logic but by eliminating the last structural limit on how completely and self- sufficiently a political world can be constructed without documentary grounding.
The Russian warship meme documented in Paper 1 (Bösch & Divon, 2024) spread as a heroic narrative — Ukrainian soldiers defying a warship, the sound page accumulating 80 billion views — without circulation depending on whether the details of the exchange were documentarily established. The IDF thirst trap content in Paper 2 (Bösch & Divon, 2026) produced a humanised image of military actors through dance challenges and platform vernaculars without making any verifiable claim about the conflict it was embedded in. In neither case did factual accuracy or inaccuracy appear to govern circulation or political effect. What mattered was not whether the content was true but whether it produced affective resonance with a political imaginary that made particular responses feel warranted.
The serial Trump images documented in Paper 4 (Bösch, forthcoming) — gangster, conductor, pope, king, Sith lord, Superman — do not advance explicit propositional claims. Together they produce a world in which executive authority feels mythic, sacred, and extra- democratic — not argued but aesthetically stabilised through serial repetition. The @dobermanncloe1 account constructs a völkisch political imaginary through dozens of synthetic videos without advancing explicit propositional claims — blonde children with eagles, warrior women with national flags, Putin as guitar-playing ally. Generative AI does not introduce this dynamic — it completes it. Each image adds another layer to a political world that accumulates through aesthetic density rather than argument — felt as coherent before any individual claim is evaluated.
The Trump Gaza AI video documented in Paper 4 (Bösch, forthcoming) constructs a complete political world — Trump as redeemer, Gaza as luxury resort, displacement as transformation from chaos to order — by subordinating a real political proposal to affective overwriting. Before generative AI, synthetic plausibility required real events as narrative anchor (Bösch & Divon, 2024), real bodies as footage (Bösch & Divon, 2026), or real political figures as recognisable referents (Bösch, 2026). Generative AI in this specific case does not remove the political referent — the Gaza proposal exists — but the evidentiary constraint on what images can be made to show. What disappears is the requirement that images maintain an empirical or indexical referent to events that actually occurred. Political worlds can now be constructed through algorithmic synthesis without the requirement that an image record something that happened. The propaganda effect is therefore not simply more intense — it is more closed: a self-sufficient political world that requires the world as referent but no longer as evidentiary limit.
Across the four papers, synthetic plausibility emerges as a structurally necessary dimension of postdigital propaganda — present in Papers 1, 2, and 3 as affective resonance that circulates independently of factual status, and completed in Paper 4 as the construction of self-sufficient political worlds no longer bounded by documentary grounding.
4.6 Co-Constitution and the Limits of Analytical Separation
The preceding sections treated platform infrastructure, platformized affect, participatory recursion, and synthetic plausibility as analytically distinct dimensions — isolating each to give it sufficient theoretical resolution. The cases discussed across these sections are therefore analysed as configurations in which the conditions of ecological saturation, directional coherence, and permeation converge to varying degrees, rather than as uniform instances of full alignment. What the four papers document collectively is not four parallel phenomena but a mutually reinforcing process in which each dimension conditions the operation of the others.
The AfD audio meme documented in Paper 3 (Bösch, 2026) demonstrates this most directly. TikTok’s sound page architecture automatically aggregated derivative videos into a single feed, so that each user encountering the sound arrived not at an isolated video but at an accumulated ecology of thousands — a sonic atmosphere in which AfD dominance felt rhythmically inevitable before any individual act of persuasion had occurred. Thousands of users then produced their own derivatives within this ecology — neither centrally coordinated nor purely spontaneous — performing participatory alignment without deliberate persuasive intent. The accumulated result, across more than 9,000 instantiations, was a political imaginary stabilised through repetition alone. Infrastructure produced the affective register; the affective register shaped participatory production; participatory production stabilised synthetic plausibility. No single dimension explains the meme's political effect; the effect emerges from the recursive interaction of all four.
The IDF thirst trap corpus analysed in Paper 2 (Bösch & Divon, 2026) makes the same point from a different angle. Infrastructure organised the visibility of individual soldier accounts over institutional ones. The platform’s existing affective grammar of desire and approachability preceded and shaped how military content was received. Organic and coordinated amplification became indistinguishable in the propagation phase. And the accumulated aesthetic repetition of humanised, desirable soldiers across hundreds of accounts produced a political imaginary in which military violence and personal intimacy became not merely compatible but mutually reinforcing. The propaganda effect — normalization of military actors as objects of affection within a context of active conflict — is not reducible to any single dimension. It is the structural outcome of their co- constitution.
Reading across the four papers, the four dimensions do not appear at uniform intensity in every case — and this variation is not a limitation of the framework. What produces postdigital propaganda is not the simultaneous maximisation of all four dimensions but their convergence to a degree at which political alignment becomes observable as a property of the platform ecology. Infrastructure, affect, participation, and synthetic plausibility are present across all four cases; what varies is the degree to which each operates as the primary driver of alignment in any given configuration.
A pattern of substitution becomes visible in this variation that the framework must account for. Across the cases, participatory recursion and synthetic plausibility appear to operate in a partially substitutive relationship: where participatory recursion is highest — Papers 1 and 3 — synthetic plausibility is comparatively lower; where synthetic plausibility reaches its highest intensity — Paper 4 — participatory recursion is comparatively reduced. Generative AI performs at scale what participatory recursion previously required distributed human involvement to achieve. Where thousands of users once needed to independently produce, remix, and recirculate content for a political imaginary to accumulate affective density, generative AI compresses that process into algorithmic synthesis. This compression is enabled by datafication: generative models are trained on the accumulated outputs of prior participatory cycles, meaning the affective registers and political imaginaries that once emerged through distributed human recursion are now encoded as generative capacity. Synthetic plausibility is therefore not simply faster than participatory recursion — it is participatory recursion distilled, with the final constraint removed: scale no longer depends on human involvement. Synthetic plausibility does not introduce a new propaganda logic — it removes the final constraint on one already operative. This substitution dynamic is the empirical basis for the claim, that generative AI represents an intensification of pre-existing structural conditions rather than their cause.
Existing frameworks — computational propaganda, participatory propaganda, disinformation studies — each presuppose a temporal arc with identifiable actors, moments, and outcomes.
What the four papers document is a condition rather than a campaign — a structural state of the platform ecology in which propaganda effects are not only deployed by actors but generated through the dynamics of the platform itself, not designed but emergent, not concluded but self-perpetuating. The differentiating criterion is not deliberate manipulation, content type, or actor category, but the recursive production of political alignment as a structural outcome of the platform ecology's interacting dimensions.
